What Alternative Ink Cartridges good for?

Printer users have begun switching to generic, remanufactured and refilled ink cartridges over OEM printer cartridges due to a number of reasons:

Cost. These printer cartridges are relatively cheaper than original printer cartridges. The difference of the prices may be as much as 50% lower than OEM printer cartridges.

Availability. Some printer cartridge brands are hard to find, such as printer cartridges for Dell printers. Generic and remanufactured printer cartridges, on the other hand, are a lot easier to find. The same holds true with ink refill kits that are used to refill already spent cartridges.

Disadvantages of Alternative Ink Cartridges

Printing Quality. Because alternative choices for ink cartridges use generic ink tints and colors, there is a possibility that the quality of the print out is not be as high as those printed out using printer cartridges that have been manufactured by the printer companies.

Possible Damage to the Printer. Remanufactured and refilled ink cartridges used already spent cartridges for holding the ink. Because these cartridges already have worn out parts, there is a higher risk for the ink to leak out if the remanufacturing or refilling process is not done properly, causing damage to the entire printer.

Printer Warranty

One of the major concerns of printer users in using generic, remanufactured and refilled ink cartridges is that the printer warranty may be voided. This is not true. Printer consumers are protected by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Improvement Act. This law states that under no circumstance can a printer manufacturer void the warranty of a printer unit for using generic, remanufactured or refilled ink cartridges.

AMD at Intel's Heels



Intel Corporation was founded in 1968 as Integrated Electronics Corporation and is based in Santa Clara, California, USA. In 1991 Intel achieved the number one semiconductor market share ranking, and have clung firmly to their position ever since. Semiconductor technology progresses at a relentless rate, accelerated by a throw-away society and a technologically inclined generation. In a market where innovation and invention play such vital roles, it is a remarkable achievement for Intel to have kept one step ahead, retaining the crown amongst its competitors.

But who is there to compete against the CPU giant? Last year, Intel boasted impressive profit margins of 22.3%, leaving plenty of slack to cut prices in the face of competition. With the recent integration of Intel technologies by Apple, who chose to adopt Pentium CPU's for their workstations, it seems Intel's foundations are set ever more firmly in the uneasy ground of the semiconductor market.

AMD, Advanced Micro Devices, is an American manufacturer of integrated circuits based in Sunnyvale, California. It is the second largest supplier of x86-compatible, or desktop workstation, mobile and small scale server processors, following Intel. AMD is 15th among the worldwide top-twenty semiconductor sales leaders, generating revenues of $3.9 billion in 2005.

AMD once operated as a licensed second source manufacturer Intel processors, but in the face of growing popularity of the PC clone market, in 1986 Intel decided to free itself of ties to it's perceived competitors to start producing CPU's on its own terms. This action led to a prolonged and fierce legal dispute where AMD claimed Intel had violated their contract. The Supreme Court of California agreed, and forced Intel to pay over $1 billion in compensation.

In 1991 AMD released the Am386 processor, and followed with the Am486 in 1993. Both were competitively priced, undercutting Intel's equivalent processors. AMD quickly established a foothold in the semiconductor market, specifically in the desktop and workstation level, selling a million units of the former in less than a year.

More than a decade on and AMD continue to increase its hold of the semiconductor market share, pursuing its competitors with aggressive pricing and partnerships. Today, 24th July 2006, AMD announced the acquisition of ATI, a major supplier of desktop graphics cards, a transaction valued at approximately US$5.4 billion. As our processors play much more centric roles in our lives, it is not difficult to imagine a day where a personal computer sits along side, or even integrated into every television set. With such innovations as Sky+ opening up consumers to the idea of media centric computing in their living rooms, and subsequently their cars and their mobile phones, its clear why AMD sees potential in developing processors with integrated graphical functions and routines.

What are Docx Files - Can I Open Them?



Have you received at .docx file attachment in an email and wondered what the heck it was? Well those are okay to open, but you may not be able to read them in an older version of Microsoft Word. These are safe files and if you trust the sender you can open them just like any MS Word file.

About the .docx files:

My files are in the new 2007 Microsoft Word and those with tricky formatting may not be able to be read by someone with an old version of windows. So if I send them to you, well yes I figure that you might not be able to read them. I use the 2007 Microsoft Word Templates (they are in .doc'x), I do this because they have easy formatting for the table of contents which is hooked to the pages and changes the page numbers automatically and keeps the fonts.

It works good for making eBooks. Unfortunately, not everyone has the new 2007 Microsoft Word yet, so if you choose to use all the tricky features you cannot share the files. But you can convert to .pdf and everyone can read that. Once you get the new MS Word 2007 you will be amazed at all the new features it has and it will greatly increase your productivity.

Personally I very much recommend the new Microsoft 2007 Office Suite and would encourage you to upgrade. It has drastically helped me. And it does not cost that much either. What Is Malware?

You have probably heard computer people talk about Malware and the damage it can cause. I recently realized that those outside the computer industry are not always familiar with the word. So here is my answer to the frequent question, "What is Malware?"

First, the word "malware" is formed from the words "malicious" and "software." Malware, then is software that performs malicious activities on a computer system, usually without the knowledge of the computer owner or user. Calling something "malware" presupposes a harmful intention on the part of the creator or sender of the software. Malware can harm individual computers, networks or servers.

Second, "malware" is a broad term that includes a number of tactics used to do harm to a computer. It includes computer viruses, worms, spyware, Trojan horses, and dishonest ads. For example, there are now images in advertising (e-mails, newsletters, etc.) that are activated when the communication is opened. Embedded in the images are codes that gather information from your computer and report it back to the sender. Some service providers have now begun to block all images from e-mails.

Third, "malware" is the same as a "computer contaminant" – a phrase used in the legal codes of several states, including California.

Fourth, defective software is not malware. Although defective software can damage a computer or a network, the manufacturer's intent is not to do harm.

Malware can affect or be aimed at any single computer or any type of system such as a network, an application, or an operating system. What makes a computer vulnerable to malware?
• When all of the computers in a network operate on the same operating system, all of the computers in the network are vulnerable if someone breaks that system.
• Bugs or errors in a system make it easier to exploit with malware.
• Hidden codes from internet sites, e-mails, CDs or other disks can introduce malware without the user realizing it.
• Inappropriate changes to the internal structure of the system.
• Inadequate system security that allows access to unauthorized persons.

You can be proactive in protecting your computer or system from malware. The primary elements of malware protection are:
• Keep all software current and properly patched
• Update your operating system regularly
• Update your anti-virus software regularly
• Download files only from reliable known sources
• Read all license agreements carefully before installing new software. Look for warnings about spyware.
• Install and use a firewall.
• Allow only the experts to modify code or make changes to the structure of the system.

If the smooth and efficient operation of your computer or your network is important to you, it is important to remember that many damaged files and programs can never be repaired or recovered if attacked by malware. Protect your system, protect your programs, protect your files.

My computer is designed to serve us humans. It is a machine. Sometimes it can appear intelligent and come up with some interesting stuff. But us humans we still tell it what to do.

We program it from the beginning. Its future actions are all set in its operating system. A computer's behaviour is predetermined. We set the parameters within which it functions. A computer is an automaton. Here to serve us with its programs. We don't want it to go outside what we want it to do since that would not serve us. It could only slow down our day if it kept crashing or its programs did not work. What we want from it is efficient action. We certainly do not want a computer to think for itself. Imagine having a personal computer ask you each time you run it, "Why should I perform this task for you?" Highly inefficient!

We want robotic action. An efficient non thinking machine that takes orders and performs them efficiently. Lucky us Humans aren't like computers.

1.0 What is a computer?

Basically, a computer is a gadget that contains of both hardware and software in one packages that able you to obtained various types of input, to manipulate them, and transfer them into various types of output. The computer's main uses today include information processing of all kinds, storing that information, running various office applications, sending and receiving email, running and maintaining databases, accessing the internet, and running thousands of different types and designs of machinery and systems. Personal computers come in several different styles such as PCs, laptops, tablets, and hand-held.

2.0 There are several concepts that should be understood to make your personal computer use easier and more productive. Among them are-

Input-- The computer takes input from various devices, manipulates it, and outputs it in a number of ways. Input devices include the keyboard, mouse, CD/DVD player, floppy drive, tape drive, modem, audio devices, ethernet adapter, and various types of ports including USB, serial, Firewire, and parallel.

Processing-- The processor takes all the 1's and 0's of the data stream and processes them into useful information. It also controls the flow of data throughout the motherboard and between the assorted devices connected to it. A simple example of processing would be the calculation of 2 + 2 = 4 from the calculator program.

Output-- Depending on what the user is doing, the computer can produce many different types of output. Some output devices include the monitor, speakers, modem, various ports, floppy drive, ethernet adapter, CD/DVD drives, printers, and even other computers and the internet.

Storage-- The computer takes the various types of information and stores them for future use. Temporary storage is in RAM, or Random Access Memory. Permanent storage is on the hard drive, tape drive, CDs and DVD's, floppy drive, or other external devices.

A File is the basic unit of storage and manipulation on a computer. Data is stored as files- for example, a resume. Files are usually grouped together and stored in folders and directories.

On a computer, software is really what runs the show. The software is the real intelligence and it tells the hardware what to do. Software consists of what are called programs. Programs are a collection of files that work together to do a specific task. For example, Windows is a program. It runs as a GUI, or Graphical User Interface. This allows the computer user to see the programs as picture and text based instead of just text on a plain background. Nearly everything done on the modern computer is done through GUI programs.

Computer hardware consists of the following-

Computer case-- This is the actual box that holds the motherboard, power supply, and all the components.

Power supply-- This unit supplies the electrical power to run everything. It also contains a fan that pulls cooling air through the case to remove the heat generated by the processor.

Motherboard-- Everything in the computer either sits on, or is connected to, the motherboard. It contains the processor, memory, chipsets, video, audio, battery, different jacks, and contains the Buss that connects everything together.

Parts of the motherboard-

Processor-- This is like the engine of the computer. It processes all the bits of data very quickly and works with memory to handle the Input/Output duties. Processor speed is measured in gigahertz, which stands for billions of cycles per second.

Memory-- The RAM, or memory modules, are where all the programs are running. Data shuttles back and forth very quickly between the memory and the processor. The memory is emptied when the computer is turned off or Windows is restarted. RAM stands for Random Access Memory, meaning that data may be constantly written to and retrieved from this memory.

The Buss is the network of pathways between the various devices. It consists of the actual printed circuits on the motherboard. Various data cables are also used to physically connect the motherboard to different devices, which are not directly attached to it.

Expansion slots-- These are slots which allow the plugging in of expansion cards to the computer such as improved video, more ports, and different types of drives. These cards are sometimes called daughterboards and they can consist of different architectures such as ISA, PCI, and AGP.

Battery-- The battery provides a trickle of power to the motherboard, mainly to keep the clock running and keep track of time.

Chipsets-- These are various memory chips on the motherboard that control different devices such as video, keyboard, mouse, audio, network adapter, etc. Collectively, these are known as the BIOS. The BIOS contains all the default settings for the various computer hardware devices, and basic features such as processor speed, input device settings, buss types, etc.

Ports-- The ports supply the connection points for the various external I/O devices. There are ports for the keyboard, mouse, monitor, modem, printer, audio devices like headphones, speakers, and microphones, USB and Firewire devices, and ethernet.

Hard drive-- The hard drive basically consists of spinning disks with one or more read heads. It stores all the information in the form of files and directories and holds the operating system files as well. Hard drives may be built with different types of buss, including SCSI, ISA, or SATA.

Floppy drive-- The floppy drive writes and reads data to and from a floppy disk. Because of its limited storage capacity, the floppy disk is being phased out.

CD/DVD ROM drives-- These drives play the data from a CD or DVD disk. They are commonly used for music and video storage. A CD or DVD Burner allows the computer to create copies of data on these media. These devices are considered to be ROM, or Read only Memory, meaning that the data on them can only be read and not written to.

Monitor-- The monitor displays information it receives from the graphics adapter. There are two types of monitors- CRT or cathode ray tube, and LCD or liquid crystal display. Various adjustments are possible such as brightness, contrast, color, position, etc. Resolution on the video monitor is adjusted through Windows.

Keyboard-- The keyboard is the standard input device. It issues commands, types letters and numbers, as well as performing many functions through the control and special keys.

Mouse-- The mouse is used to provide different types of input to Windows and other GUI programs such as point and click, drag, select, etc. It may contain left and right click buttons as well as a scroll wheel.

Joysticks and game devices-- There are many different styles of these controllers and they enable manipulation of objects in computer games.

Basic sequence of what's happening when the computer starts-

The switch is turned on and power flows to power supply.

The fan starts and power is supplied to motherboard.

The BIOS loads the video driver so you can see the rest of the sequence on the monitor.

Computer BIOS goes through its startup routine, called the POST or power-on-self-test, which checks the various hardware devices.

If all the hardware checks out OK, the BIOS looks for the hard drive with the operating system startup files.

The startup files are located and loaded into memory and the startup sequence is initiated.

Windows starts up and displays on the monitor.

Other programs that are in the startup directory start at this time.

Computer is ready to use.
